Transected Aorta
Clinical presentation:
A 22 year old male, admitted following a car
collision.

The view is not taken in full inspiration. Despite the projection in this 'portable' view, taken on the ward, the mediastinum is much too wide for a young adult. The aorta looks unfolded and there is widening of the upper mediastinum. The smaller impression of the aorta on the trachea is lower than the center of radius of the whole density. The right tracheal stripe is widened and there is widening on the left side that extends as a band of soft tissue density over the course of the left subclavian artery. There is blurring of the usual clear margin of the aorto-pulmonary reflection onto the left main pulmonary artery and left proximal hilar detail is unclear.
