Idiopathic (main) Pulmonary Artery Dilation

Idiopathic dilation of the main pulmonary artery may occur and be first noted on a screening chest xray without accompanying murmur or physical findings. It is not the result of any shunt and there is no pulmonary valve abnormality or pulmonary hypertension.

The MRI views shown here make clear that the dilation is primarily of the main pulmonary artery segment. Aside from the unusual vessel configuration, the finding is of no clinical consequence.

Echo short axis view at aortic level is comparable to the labelled axial MRI with idiopathically enlarged main pulmonary artery.
